Course Overview
This well supported and in demand course has been developed in collaboration with the UHCW Head and Neck and the Anaesthetics Department. This full day course will equip you with the knowledge and practical skills to manage various tracheostomy emergencies utilising our state-of-the-art immersive high-fidelity facilities and manikins. This course integrates human factors and technical skills in managing tracheostomy emergencies. Complementing these scenarios will be lectures and an opportunity to get hands on with kit and troubleshooting skills.
This course is for Anaesthetists, Critical Care Doctors, ENT, Head & Neck Doctors, Nurses & AHP’s involved in the care of tracheostomy patients.
All candidates must provide GMC or NMC numbers.
Course Objectives
Following the National Tracheostomy Safety Project (NTSP) recommendations we have developed our own multi model approach of using simulation, skills stations and lectures throughout this course. You will have the opportunity to learn together as an MDT about the management of a tracheostomy emergency, the two distinct differences between the Red & Green bedside information and algorithms, human factors, MDT working and soft skills.
This course will cover which patients the two generic NTSP algorithms were developed for and that they would cover the vast majority of common and easily reversible clinical situations that arise whilst accepting that a number of special circumstances do exist (e.g. the critically ill patient in the intensive care unit or the patient who has undergone a complex tracheal reconstruction). Commonalities with management and ‘oxygenation of the patient takes priority’.
