Course Overview:
This course is specific to Emergency Medicine Trainees at ST3 level and is on the West Midlands deanery’s list of approved courses.
A full day course designed to challenge the delegate with a range of adult and paediatric emergency presentations using high fidelity manikins within a simulation suite. The scenarios aim to target learning in both clinical and non-technical skills. It covers a variety of clinical situations with varying degrees of complexity. Each scenario is followed by reflection and inquiry through debrief by expert faculty.
The high fidelity allows delegates an opportunity to immerse themselves in a simulated clinical scenario that looks and feels real.
The course will enable delegates to:
- Assess, investigate, and provide initial management of adult and paediatric patients attending with a range of undifferentiated presentations.
- Consider relevant procedural skills within capability and competence.
- Use appropriate communication skills to negotiate and manage complicated or troubling interactions between patients, families, and colleagues.
- Establish the most appropriate level of care for critically unwell patients-including end-of life decisions.
- Demonstrate effective leadership and team playing skills in the context of emergency management.
- Learn and apply appropriate management strategies to influence, negotiate and reassess priorities, working with their respective teams to effectively manage complex and dynamic events.

- Develop and further refine leadership skills.
- Recognise and manage acute life-threatening situations.
- Deal with a range of challenging cases presenting to the Emergency department.
- Make safe clinical decisions appropriate to level of experience.
- Awareness of the human factors that may impact on clinical decision making and patient safety.
- Recognise and describe strategies to reduce medial error.
- Dealing with complexity and uncertainty.
