UHCW Simulation Faculty Development Course

Course Lead:
Mrs Sandra Navas (Simulation Service Lead)

Course Organisers:
Mrs Sandra Navas (Simulation Service Lead)
Mrs Debra Hewitt (Simulation Administrator & Course Organiser)

This course is designed with the ‘Novice Debriefer’ in mind. Equally suitable to more experienced facilitators who require a refresher or those that have never attended a debrief course. Applicable to any multi-disciplinary professional who are planning to facilitate a debrief in Hi Fidelity Simulation Courses. This course is applicable to professionally qualified staff employed at UHCW. External candidates will be considered if places available.

Course Overview:

An effective debrief is the most important component of a simulation experience. It allows the learners to reflect on their performance and identify key learning points.

The role of the facilitator is to guide this reflection rather than impose their priorities on it.

Whilst high quality scenarios are an important aspect of simulation it is the performance of the faculty that will determine the success or failure of the session. Well trained, confident and engaged faculty will be able to provide the best possible learning experience for the learners.

The course provides the novice debriefer with a blended learning experience. This is a 2-day course which includes eLearning, workshops, group activity, moulage techniques, videos and most importantly hands on practice at debriefing. The main aim of the course is to help the candidate gain more insight into both the concept of simulation and debrief.

Objectives

  • To gain knowledge of the concept of simulation, what it is and how we do it
  • To appreciate what to include in the Pre brief
  • To comprehend what is involved in scenario design
  • An opportunity to design a scenario and understand what happens behind the scenes and perform the scenario in real time
  • Establish what makes a good debrief
  • Provide practical tips on how to perform a debrief
  • Provide a structure for debriefing
  • Develop strategies to manage challenging candidates
  • Opportunity to rehearse debriefing skills

    Course Feedback:

What learners have taken away from the session…

  • Very well organised. Engaging and learning through gamification. Two absolutely amazing days.
  • Excellent course, well put together. Good to go through the whole sim process from pre brief to developing a sim to debrief.
  • I really enjoyed how much hands-on work there was in the session. I particularly enjoyed the make up session with Rob, and the most useful part was leading our own debrief. Having the day before with the sims was very useful.
  • Interactive. Great insight to sim and the backstage workings! Thanks so much!
  • I found the practical aspects of the course really useful, in particular practising running a scenario from the control room and the practicing debrief sessions.
  • Amazing team, really inspiring and motivating loved the study days.
  • Greta opportunities to debrief a scenario with team members (and problem solve issues with team dynamics). Was also very useful to watch others and glean tips from others’ interactions. Loved the moulage sessions!
  • Loved how interactive it was. Felt comfortable giving my thoughts. Gave me lots to think about going forward and techniques to try.
  • Overall excellent course covering so many aspects of becoming simulation faculty and debrief skills.
  • Really well organised and facilitated. Glad to have had the pre work and then not needed to focus on this theory so much in the course.
  • Really useful linking theory to practice and making more sense of it. Very useful observing others debriefs
  • Practising the debrief. Observing and learning from others in a fun and friendly manner.
