A body of research indicates that working in the helping professions is rewarding but emotionally demanding, and that the conflicting demands of an emerging professional can be particularly stressful. Many trainees feel ill prepared for the realities of practice which can engender psychological and physical health problems, and this is often exacerbated by their reluctance to disclose that they are experiencing difficulties. This highly practical workshop places a focus on the soft skills required to support a trainee who is not performing to required standard, rather than formalized protocols.
By the end of the workshop, delegates will be able to:
- Explain how Trainees get to a position of being in difficulty and the potential impact
- Identify approaches to root cause analysis
Outline Programme:
- The challenge of being in difficulty
- Defining ‘in difficulty’
- Common issues presented
- Barriers to early reporting by others
- Consequences of delaying intervention
- Supervisor and trainee responses to issues
- Developing a diagnosis and formulating a plan
- Observation
- Discussing with others – the pitfalls and challenges
- The 5 point plan
